Oral Medicine is that branch of dentistry which deals with the study of oral
and maxillofacial diseases, oral manifestation of systemic diseases, oral diseases causing systemic diseases,
their diagnosis by modern scientific method and their medical management. It is a branch which is a bridge for
medical science and dentistry.
Oral and maxillofacial radiology is that branch of dentistry which deals with
the study of radiation including x rays as applicable to oral diseases, radiographic techniques to take
radiographs of oral and maxillofacial regions, radiographic interpretation to diagnose various diseases and
finally radiotherapy for oral lesion particularly for oral cancer.
It was recognized as a speciality by DCI in 1968 (O.M.) and 1971(O.R.) and then
has made tremendous in the field of dentistry.Oral medicine is that area of special competence concerned with
health of and with disease involving oral and para oral structures.It includes those principles of medicine
that relate to the mouth, as well as research in biology, pathology and clinical spheres.It includes the
diagnosis and medical management of diseases, specific of orofacial tissues and of oral manifestation of
systemic diseases.It further includes the management of behavioural disorders and the oral and dental
treatment of medically compromised patients.
