About Nadiad

Sakshar Bhoomi, or Nadiad, takes pride in being known for more than one thing. Here was born the great litterateur Shri Govardhan Ram Tripathi, known for his novel Saraswatichandra, and the poet Raskavi Raghunath Brahmbhatt. Here was born the great Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Here is where from Mahatma Gandhi began his Non Cooperation Movement. Nadiad lies in the 'Milk Bowl' Kheda district, which houses the headquarters of Amul.

Amidst such rich history lies Dharmsinh Desai University, a fitting tribute to the significance of the land to the nation and the world.

Tell Me More

Nadiad was originally called Natpur, or the city of Nats (pronounced as 'nut'). These 'nats' were dancers and performers thought to be the ones to settle what is now called Nadiad. Nadiad served as a significant centre in the Indian struggle for Independence as it was the base of choice for both Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in their endeavours to oust the British from the country. Sardar Patel started the famous Indian Farmer's Revolution from Nadiad in 1928.

Swami Vivekanand, Shri Aurobindo and Shri Rabindranath Tagore used to frequent Nadiad, and have left their indelible mark on the land.

I'm Still Curious

Geographically, Nadiad lies roughly in the centre of Ahmedabad and Vadodara, with the star of the White Revolution, Anand, just about 20 km away. This puts Nadiad in a very opportunistic spot academically, as including Dharmsinh Desai University in Nadiad itself, Nadiad is close to three other prominent universities in Gujarat:

Sardar Patel University in Vidyanagar, Anand
Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, and
M.S. University in Vadodara.

The Santram Temple

Santram_mandir
'Jai Maharaj ! '

Yes. That's the preferred greeting of Nadiad. Maharaj refers to Santram maharaj, who is like an anchor figure in Nadiad and in the life and fabric of the society here in general.

Santram Mandir (temple) is famous for its charitable and philanthropic efforts in Nadiad and beyond. The temple trust has several hospitals and centres that cater to the underprivileged section of society by offering them top tier services at fractional, if not nominal, costs.

It is probably this gesture by the people working at the Santram Temple Trust and Nadiad being the centre of such a gesture, that even in chaotic and politically unstable times, Nadiad remains as calm and stable as ever. Communal violence is practically non-existent in Nadiad and it is made possible in no less way by the religious bonding people have developed.
